Ethan’s Butterflies:

A Spiritual Book For Parents and Young Children After a Baby’s Passing
by: Christine Jonas-Simpson; Illustrated by Karen Friis

Spiritual comfort and understanding after a baby’s passing was what Christine Jonas-Simpson was looking for in answering her young sons’ difficult questions about their baby brother Ethan’s passing. This book takes the parents and young children through the journey of deep sorrow and loss of a baby brother or sister from the moment of expectation of meeting them to the despair of knowing they passed, to the joy of reconnecting with them in another way. This story is about living and feeling the deep loss of a baby as well as transforming this precious loss through connecting and creating new relationships.

Proceeds from the sale of this book will go to bereavement charities (including Bereaved Families of Ontario-Toronto), research and education. For the last 2 ½ years, Christine has been a volunteer in BFO’s Infant Loss program, meeting one one one with newly bereaved parents and co-facilitating mutual support groups. Ethan’s Butterflies can be purchased through BFO-Toronto or online at http://www.trafford.com/06-0606.

Bereaved Families of Ontario-Toronto presents:

“Behind Closed Doors:
Youth Talk About Grief”

A 15-minute educational video on Adolescent Bereavement.

Produced by the Guelph International Resource Centre and funded by Gore Mutual Insurance Company Foundation, the Mount Pleasant Group, The Simple Alternative and Canadian Heritage, this candid video explores the experience of a group of young people dealing with the deaths of family members and close friends.

In partnership with Scadding Court Community Centre, the video gives a look inside a mutual support group for bereaved teenagers and follows two young people – Jordache and Olivia – as they talk about how their loss has impacted them and their relationships with friends, family, school and their community.

Interspersed with commentary from two experts in adolescent bereavement, the video serves to educate parents, caregivers, community support workers and school personnel about the experience of grieving teens. The story-telling format also makes the video suitable for viewing by bereaved youth and their peers.

To order the video, call 416-440-0290 or email info@bfotoronto.ca
Copies are available in person for $20.00 or by mail for $22.00 (includes all taxes & shipping)

I AM A ROSE by Stacey Levitt

As a wonderful tribute to their daughter Stacey Levitt, Stacey's parents have published a book of her poems written between 1987 and 1994. Stacey died on August 30, 1995, at age 18.

In their foreward, Stacey's parents Ned and Cheryl Levitt say, "Her poems show a sensitivity and wisdom well beyond her years and serve to comfort us in our time of sorrow. This book contains many of her poems and when you finish reading them, you will know Stacey."

The book also contains moving thoughts written by Stacey's mom, dad and sisters. Parents who have lost a child will easily relate to their poignant words expressing what Stacey meant to them and how they miss her.

The price is $15.00 including shipping and handling.

A CHILD'S GRIEF

A Video Resource for Families and their Caregivers

The reaction of children to the loss of a parent or sibling can have devastating consequences. Adults often are unaware of how children express their grief and the variety of ways they can be helped. This program tracks the lives of eight children attending a bereavement support group.

Dramatic footage of these children speak openly and honestly about their sometimes surprising ways of dealing with the death of a loved one. It also features some of the creative therapies including art, dance and music that children use to work through their grief.

Broadcast on the CBC Newsworld program Rough Cuts.

A resource for educators, nurses, physicians, guidance counsellors, clergy, social workers, mental health professionals, and bereaved parents and children.

IN MY THOUGHTS

A Handbook for Families Who Have Lost a Child in Death

IN MY THOUGHTS is a helpful book written by Barbara Klich and published by Bereaved Families of Ontario / Toronto

IN MY THOUGHTS has been written for parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, teachers, caregivers, and health professionals -- in the hope that there can be some understanding of what happens when a child dies.

A Review

"This is the book I have been waiting for. Barbara Klich has perfectly described the emotions, the thoughts, the feelings of a family who are grieving the loss of a child. She touched me deeply with her opening paragraph with the two words 'If Only'. Those words gripped me and I was unable to put the book down.

"Barbara touched emotions which soared through my mind from the ridiculous things well intentioned friends and colleagues say, to my own ridiculous doings and sayings. She confirmed for me so many feelings I have harboured and perhaps felt silly admitting. She says it all in a well written, easy to read format which should be a manual for all who are bereaved.

"I highly recommend this book to libraries. But it should also be required reading for all health professionals and for those studying social science.

"I want to thank Barbara and her family for sharing their private thoughts and experiences with us. After reading the book, I feel as though I know her son Teddy and most certainly felt her pain even though Teddy died 19 years ago.

"Bereaved Families of Ontario / Toronto should also be thanked for their assistance in making this touching story a reality. We all will benefit."

-- Carol Freeman, November 1994
