Volunteer Opportunities

BFO Toronto is a community of people who have been brought together by loss and love. Volunteering provides an opportunity to connect with others who understand life-changing loss and is a beautiful way to honour the legacy of a lost loved one.

We’re looking for group volunteer facilitators for online and in person groups, as well office administration, helpers at BFO-Toronto events, and for our committees.

A message from one of our dedicated volunteers:
“There are very few events in our lives that can make us feel as lost and alone as losing a loved one. I was wandering aimlessly with no company other than my own shadow when I found BFO. Being involved in the  peer support group at BFO gave me a sense of safety, warmth and community. While the grief journey is not a linear one, having a friend like BFO was instrumental in bringing me out of the shadows and helping me to find my smile again.
My experience with BFO had such a profound impact on my life, that I now volunteer with them in the hopes that I can help someone experiencing loss the way BFO so generously helped me.
Grief is one of the very few universal experiences which we all share.  BFO can help you carry that burden, so you too can find your smile again.”
~Brendan Burke, Volunteer, BFO-Toronto

Facilitators

Peer-led support groups are at the heart of BFO-Toronto and we are always looking for volunteer facilitators. Volunteers receive 30 hours of training in peer support, group facilitation and bereavement and grief theory. After completing the training, volunteer facilitators provide peer-to-peer support delivery to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Facilitators may also meet one-to-one with BFO Toronto clients to provide initial support. Volunteer facilitators receive ongoing support and opportunities for professional development from BFO Toronto staff and advisors.

Office Administration

Volunteers who are able to commit 3+ hours per week can help us with some of the behind-the-scenes office work.

BFO-Toronto Events

BFO-Toronto holds at least three fundraiser events each year where we provide an opportunity to honour our loved ones. Volunteers are essential to the smooth operation of these events.

Committees

BFO-Toronto has volunteer committees that support our two staff members in areas such as communications, program design and fundraising.
